Fabulous Johann LÖTZ Witwe Nautilus Lamp
Wonderful Loetz Nautilus Lamp with Silver Plated Italian Mermen Base. The Nautilus shade was likely commissioned by the Italian Lamp manufacturer, Fratelli Lowry in Genoa Italy which commissioned Loetz to produce a nearly identical Nautilus Shade with martele mould blown texture. The shade has 8 applied gold wafers with twisted applied prunts and gold applied rim. This shade lights beautifully with a 7 watt incandescent bulb.
Excellent Condition Glass with a tiny sharp edge or burst on the tip of one of the gold prunts which is very difficult to see but can be felt with a finger. A few tiny bursts and inclusions in the glass. The bronze has some loss of silver plating but overall in very good condition. The pink base has a few minor chips.
unsigned glass, produced 1903-1904, 9” Diameter x 6” High Shade 14 ½” High Overall. No apparent marks on the base.
See Loetz Series II, p.216 #II-1467 for related Martele production drawing in same form produced for Fratelli Lowry. The Nautilus decor was developed in 1903 and many of the production records are missing from that year, however the 3 Mermen are very typical of Italian Renaissance design so the base was not likely produced in Austria.
See Loetz Bohemian Glass by Hatje Cantz, p.290 #B47 for example of decor.
See Lötz Böhmisches Glas 1880 - 1940 Vol I, p. 328 for example of decor.
